About the Mediation in Media Study

The study, developed through a combination of Participatory Action Research (PAR) and Desk Research, offers a detailed analysis of the European digital media landscape. It highlights existing strategies for responsible communication and pinpoints areas for improvement, ensuring that digital media is a tool for positive change.

Participatory Action Research across Europe

Started in January 2024, the PAR aimed to identify effective methodologies to implement non-formal mediation in digital media. By actively involving our target groups through PAR, we ensured that their voices and experiences were integrated into the study. Our research also included interviews with experts and desk research conducted by partners across Europe, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of digital media in different contexts.

Partner contributions

  • Germany: Outside Media Knowledge
  • Turkey: TUZLA
  • Spain: UB Fundació Solidaritat
  • Ukraine: International European University
  • Finland: Åbo Akademy University
  • Ireland: Momentum
  • Denmark: EUEI
  • EU-wide perspective: EUCEN

Together, these contributions created a rich and diverse analysis, ensuring that the study reflects the different realities of digital media practices across Europe.

Who can benefit from the study?

The Mediation in Media Study, a combination of the reports from both research streams, offers valuable insights and guidance for:

  • Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
  • Students
  • Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
  • Digital Media Creators

These insights can help stakeholders improve digital media practices, foster responsible content creation, and embed ethical values into media use.

What’s next?

We are now working on the second phase of the project. Building on the insights from this study, we are focused on developing a Training Programme to equip stakeholders with the necessary tools and knowledge to utilize mediation in digital media as a civic and inclusive reporting method.
