As part of the COMM UNITY project’s initiative to highlight successful community radio stations, Ros FM in Roscommon, Ireland, has proven to be a valuable platform for empowering marginalised groups, particularly Ukrainian refugees. This community-driven station has taken significant steps to integrate refugees into Irish society by offering them both a voice and practical broadcasting skills. Below, we explore how Ros FM is facilitating inclusion, fostering support, and raising awareness.
Focus on Empowering Refugees
In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, Ros FM has focused on supporting Ukrainian refugees who have resettled in Ireland. By providing training in radio broadcasting, the station allows refugees to share their personal stories, challenges, and experiences on air. This initiative empowers refugees by giving them a platform to express themselves, enabling them to connect with the local community and share their narratives of displacement, adaptation, and resilience.
Integration Through Broadcasting
Ros FM doesn’t just offer refugees a space to share their voices; it also provides them with valuable skills that can aid in their integration into the Irish workforce. The training programs offered at the station equip participants with technical and communication skills that are transferable beyond broadcasting, thereby improving their employment opportunities. This dual focus on storytelling and skill-building plays a crucial role in helping refugees navigate their new environment while gaining confidence.

Impact on the Community
The work done by Ros FM has had a far-reaching impact. The initiative has raised awareness about the challenges faced by refugees, including displacement, isolation, and the difficulties of starting over in a new country. The station’s inclusive approach has fostered greater community support for refugees, contributing to a sense of solidarity and shared understanding. Additionally, by encouraging dialogue between refugees and local residents, Ros FM has strengthened the bonds within the community, helping to reduce cultural barriers and build a more cohesive society.
Ros FM’s refugee empowerment initiative exemplifies how community radio can serve as a powerful tool for social inclusion and change. Through its broadcasting programs, Ros FM continues to promote integration, offer valuable skills training, and provide a voice to those who need it most.
